Bin Laden is dead,…

Bin Laden is dead.  Some part of me never really thought that would ever happen.  It goes against most everything I believe in to celebrate a death, but in many ways, I do.  There were so many lost on that fateful day, and on the days since.  Friends, family, brothers and sisters in arms.  It’s hard not to be happy that one of the men responsible is gone.

But I am also a realist, with years of experience in the military world.  Bin Laden became a symbol over the years, the face of terrorism.  But he is hardly the only threat out there.  To think that this is the beginning of the end of it all, I think is presumptious.  Not only are there a score of other terror groups out there that want to destroy us, there is the simple fact of retribution from his disciples.  As a wife of a deployed soldier, that creates a very real fear.

I have seen a lot of extreme Obama-hate today, and I find it truly disheartening.  I have seen things about Bin Laden’s death being “convenient” in an election year, that he was “conveniently” buried at sea.  He was buried within 24 hours, per Islamic religious law, a decision for which frankly I have a lot of respect.  A respect was afforded Bin Laden that he did not show to the innocent people that died on 9-11 and in the years since.  And honestly, what proof could ever be enough for the doubters?  Photos, DNA, whatever.  There are always going to be naysayers that are going argue the veracity of any proof given.  At some point you have to have trust and faith.

There are definately things I don’t like about the government, things I believe need changing.  But when are people going to realize that these things are not always cut and dry?  That often there are things going on that the general public just isn’t privvy to?  National security exists for a reason.  Information is kept from the public, not because the government is corrupt, but because the gathering of that information by our enemies could potentially risk the lives of hundreds of people.

People don’t have to agree with our being there, or with the different things going on in the government, and that’s okay, even good.  That’s one of the great things about this country, the right to disagree.  But I also wish that sometimes people would look beneath the surface and at least recognize that perhaps they don’t know everything about a given situation.  As I said earlier, national security is a very real thing, and exists for a reason. They might not agree even if they did know everything, and that’s okay, too, but at least recognize that there are almost always more reasons than those which are publicly stated.  It’s not about everyone agreeing about everything, but about the objectivity to recognize that they might not know everything, that there might be mitigating circumstances, that there might be more than meets the eye.

It’s so easy to sit in judgement, safe in your home and in your life.  But the problems that exist in our country didn’t happen overnight, so expecting a president to come in and wave his magic wand and have them fixed overnight is unrealistic.

I have been, sitting here sorta rejoicing but quietly. I fear for all my military friends and even those closer that i call family. We have won this battle but the war is far from over. I totally agree with you. I have noticed that many people expect the president to fix things and when it doesnt its always “he is such a horrible pres.” yadda yadda. I get so frustrated with those becuase its not just the president its congress and in the end it comes down to the voter we put these people in office.

  2. Well put. I, too keep hearing how convenient it is they killed him now and the Obama bashing. I supported Obama before and will again in 2012. I don’t have any family in the military, but my husband’s family lost a family member in the WTC and his body was never recovered. They have some closure. There will be retaliation and yes, unfortunately there are other terrorists out there. Bin Laden was a monster, flat out. And then there are those who claim 9-11 never happened, it was a conspiracy.

I can agree to disagree, as long as it is done respectfully and unfortunately, it rarely is.

  3. As a wife, it scares me because my husband is there. As a former soldier, I wish I was there. All the conspiracy theories I am hearing,… some of them are SO far out there that there seems to be almost no base in reality. It is beyond just a difference of opinion.

My in-laws are very Republican, which is fine with me. I am not, which is apparently NOT okay with some. But then again, there is a lot about me that is not okay! There are times when the condescending, “you are too young to understand” attitude just gets to be too much. Especially since I am 40 years old and have spent most of my adult life in and around the Army. I think I have earned my right to an opinion without derison.
