tuesday 4: spending time

reading time: 2 minutes

This week let’s talk about spending time.

1. Are you currently reading a book you’d like to tell us about? Maybe a TV program you can recommend to us?

One of the books I’m reading right now is If You Leave Me by Crystal Hana Kim. It is such a beautiful book. It’s set in 1950s Korea, in the midst of the struggle between the North and the South. It’s about war, about the lives of refugees torn asunder, about love and loyalty, sacrifice, and strength. I’m really engrossed by it.

2. Are you a Jane Austen fan? So many seem to be. If you are what is your favorite book and who is your favorite character.  If you aren’t a fan, is there an author you especially like to read? Favorite character..etc?

Nope. I’ve never been able to get into Jane Austen, despite the several I’ve read. I am, however, obsessed with Mercedes Lackey and her Valdemar saga, made up of series and standalones. It’s high fantasy, and I’ve been reading/rereading it since the first book came out in 1987. Literally, as I have never not been reading the series since then.

3.  How do you spend your time during the day?  Do you set apart time to read, watch TV, study?

Work first. I work as an editor for a publishing company, so that always comes first. Then, since I’m an author, I write. Then comes the relaxation. Sometimes it’s playing a little World of Warcraft, but more often it’s reading and TV, crocheting at the same time. And I’m learning Swedish and brushing up on my Vietnamese.

4. Have your beliefs changed in your life time? New religion.. new politics? Or are they the same as they were growing up? Do you spend time thinking over the important things of life to take stock in your life?

I’ve always been a bit of a social justice warrior, and a rebel when compared to much of my family. I was raised Episcopalian, but it never really felt like a good fit. I’m spiritual but not religious. My sociopolitical ideology has always been at odds with most of my family. My grandparents were conservative Republicans, my grandfather serving as a State Assemblyman for years. And then there was me… the socially liberal Democrat/Independent. And unapologetically so. As for spending time thinking about the important things… I think that’s become a more regular thing over the last several years. It’s hard not to, I think, with the way the social issues have been at the forefront of consciousness recently.

  1. That is cool that you are an author! I admire that you are you, a social justice warrior! At some point we do stop looking at just ourselves and focus on others. the book you are reading sounds interesting!

  2. I love your beautiful header; both the design and the colour. Next I was taken in by your writing then I hit upon the words “I work as an editor”. That is marvellous (cheesy comment I know). Last but not least, I enjoyed the answers to your questions and getting to know more about you. Aloha. Have a beautiful week ahead.

  3. Oh, no, not Jane Austin for me either! None of the novels of that ilk that all run together in my mind! Terrible! I like your answer to #4, how it’s hard not to be more involved, to think more about “important things” than before. I didn’t used to pay any attention, just trusting “them” to do the right things, no matter who “they” were at the time.
