Saturday 9: I Can Love You Like That (1995)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? See the video and watch it below!

1) This week’s song is about a girl who grew up on the fairy tale Cinderella. The online teaching platform study.com says Cinderella has been remained popular for centuries because the moral is that kindness is a virtue that will be rewarded. As an adult, do you still believe that’s true?

Oof. This is a hard one. I’d like to think so, but the state of the world in the US right now makes me question that. It feels as if the opposite is true, at least in the bigger picture. There is little kindness or compassion in what is happening there.

2) This girl also likes romantic movies. Think of your favorite screen couple. Did they live happily ever after?

Favorite on-screen couple… that part is easy. Norman and Ethel Thayer in On Golden Pond. While it’s a drama, there’s certainly an element of love between them that’s important to the story. There’s nothing more romantic than a couple that has withstood all the tests of time. Happily ever after… do we ever know with a movie? After all, it’s just a snapshot of time. But I would like to think Norman and Ethel remained strong together.

3) While “I Can Love You Like That” was a Top Ten hit here, it reached #1 in the Canada and Zimbabwe. Could you find Zimbabwe on a globe?

Probably. Geography is not my strong suit, but I know Zimbabwe is in the southeastern part of Africa. At least, I think I know that!

4) The members of this week’s group, All-4-One, hail from Mojave, California. July and August are the hottest months in Mojave, when the afternoon temperature hovers between 87º and 97º and often climbs to 100º+. Do you thrive or melt in hot weather?

Well, I live in Hawai’i, which is not as hot as one might think. I also lived in southern Arizona, which is hot as hell. But where I lived was generally at least 10 degrees cooler than Tucson, 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. I like hot weather, so it doesn’t bother me much.

5) After having several hits in the 1990s, All-4-One saw their popularity wane in the new millennium. While they never disbanded – and will be touring throughout 2025 – the members have pursued separate interests. For example, co-founder Delious Kennedy started a YouTube channel featuring interviews with celebrities from the 80s and 90s. Do you spend a lot of time on YouTube? If yes, what do you watch?

It’s probably my #1 form of content consumption. I watch a lot of SMOSH, SMOSH Pit, and SMOSH Games. It’s all about the comedy, the fun, and the escapism. I also watch a lot of Watcher, Dropout, and Try Guys, but on their individual streaming platforms more than through YouTube. At night, I watch a lot of Huyana Beauty content, woodworking like Tamar and Fisher, pottery (especially Florian Gadsby and Potters Peak), and Never Too Small. Oh, and a lot of skoolie vids. Yeah, it’s weird. But it’s about the relaxation and the escapism for me.

6) In 1995, when this week’s song was popular, Michael Jordan “unretired” and returned to the Chicago Bulls. Tell us about a decision you wish you could undo.

This is a hard one. I generally don’t believe in regret, which is part and parcel with wanting to change decisions. I also don’t know what, if any, of my past decisions would affect great change if reversed.

7) 1995 saw Pierce Brosnan as James Bond in GoldenEye. 007 was also played by Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Daniel Craig. Do you have a favorite Bond?

I don’t really. Niven and Lazenby were before my time. I’m sure I probably saw some of the movies when I was a kid, since Dad loved Bond, but I have no memories. I did love Sean Connery, but I love some of the others, too.

8) One of McDonald’s best-selling 1995 Happy Meals featured The Power Rangers. 30 years later, those Happy Meal action figures are still available on eBay. Have you recently purchased anything on eBay?

I can’t even remember the last time I was even on eBay!!

9) Random question – Which compliment would please you the most: to be smart, great looking, or likeable?

Smart or likeable, I guess. I’ll take either!
