Saturday 9: Can’t We Talk It Over (1950)
Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? See the video and watch it below!
1) In this song, The Andrews Sisters plead for verbal communication. Is there someone you’d like to engage in a heart-to-heart conversation?
I don’t know why, but to me a “heart-to-heart” conversation implies a problem between or because of another person. So I’m going to answer within that context. And within my own little microcosm? Nope. All’s good on the family front.
But… there are a few that have passed with whom being able to get some closure would have been nice. And there are a few in the greater world with who I’d like to be able to talk some sense into, but beyond that? I’m good.
2) They want to sit together for this talk. Think about the most recent personal conversation you had. Was it in person, over the phone, or via Zoom?
In recent days, I’ve had a lot of personal conversations, which I suppose could be considered heart-to-heart, with a lot of people over a variety of modes of conversation. In person, on the phone, through FaceTime, via text.
3) This week’s tune was written by Victor Young. He was prolific, earning 22 Oscar nominations in 18 years. (His one win came after his sudden death at age 57.) Think about your friends and family. Who is the most active, productive person you know?
We’re all pretty productive, although active is a hard one. Not all things require high levels of activity to be productive.
4) The lyrics were written by Ned Washington, who is perhaps best remembered for “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Disney’s Pinocchio. Do you believe, like Jiminy Cricket, that dreams come true?
Not without assistance. I think, like with many things, you have to work toward them.
5) This week’s song is performed by The Andrews Sisters — LaVerne, Maxine and Patty. Do you have siblings? If yes, are you the oldest, the middle child, or the baby?
I’m the oldest, with one brother almost 11 years younger and another 31 years younger.
6) With more than 80 million records sold, the Andrews Sisters remain one of the most successful female vocal groups of all time. Name another girl group.
I’m gonna give you a musical spectrum of some favorite all-girl groups. Enjoy…
7) In 1950, the year “Can’t We Talk It Over” was released, we were introduced to the Peanuts comic strip. Without looking it up, do you know who created Peanuts?
Charles Schulz
8) In 1950, most suitcases were hard sided rectangles, with no wheels and a small handle at the top. They came in colors like tan, copper, green and blue. What does your luggage look like?
Basic black, soft-sided luggage.
9) Random question: Who was the last person to phone you? Did you pick up, or did it go to voice mail?
My hubby. I picked up. I don’t even have voice mail set up on my phone!!
#5: With the age gap between you and your sibs, do you think you grew up feeling like an only child?
Definitely! But I was thrilled when that changed!
I forgot to add… there were three miscarriages before me and seven between us, so he and I both were miracles in that respect.
Wow, 31 years is quite the age gap between siblings.
Yeah, my youngest brother is the result of a remarriage after my parents divorced after 21 years of marriage. My oldest kid is about a year and a half older than that brother.
Very interesting selection of songs
You’ve introduced me to some new music!
