1. After your alarm, what is the first thing you hear, most mornings upon waking?

Either the sound of the TV or the sound of the hub’s CPAP machine. They are simultaneous, but it’s usually the CPAP that registers first. I have a love-hate relationship with that thing. I love it for the obvious reasons… it helps my husband. I hate it because it/he occasionally turn me irrationally angry. He wears the cannula-style mask; it’s the only style over the years that has consistently worked for him. I love that for him. But occasionally he dislodges it, and the resulting sound will bring me from asleep to wide awake in an instant. It’s the most bone-deep annoying sound, and I hate that for me!

2. What’s the greatest rock and roll love song?

I have several contenders. Enjoy!

3. What is the most impressive river you have seen?

Hmmm… I don’t know that I have. The St. Lawrence (near where I grew up) can be impressive at times, I suppose. I guess my river experience, though vast, has been with easygoing waterways!!

4. What are some notable trees in your area or in your life?

In my area…. There are some gorgeous banyan trees in Waikiki, and there’s a pretty little grove of mini palms at the end of my street. There’s also a tree out near Shark’s Cove on the North Shore which is usually filled with chickens, which I love.

In my life…. There was a huge oak tree in my mother’s side yard which was hit by lightning and had to come down years ago. But it was beautiful. And there was a huge lilac tree by the kitchen door which always filled the air with the most wonderful scent. And by the water, there was a huge hydrangea which boasted flowers of multiple colors because the pH of the soil down there is all over the spectrum. According to Google Maps, the latter two trees are still there. The house was sold after her death in 2015. Another favorite was the crabapple tree at my grandparents’ house. That house isn’t in the family anymore, but Google Maps shows the tree still there.

5. What are you feeling optimistic about, this very moment?

Honestly, not a lot. Optimism is a daily struggle these days. So let’s keep it low key. I’m optimistic that I will successfully edit my client’s manuscript over the next week. I’m optimistic that my headache will go away soon. I’m cautiously optimistic that, at some point, my fellow Americans will get their heads out of their posteriors and help fix the sh*t show that is going on right now. Or at least slow the flood.
