This week’s questions are stolen from The Queen’s Meme

1. When is the last time you went out to a meal with someone special? Tell us about it.

Mid-March 2020. Literally, a few days before Hawaii went into its first lockdown. We are still not entirely open, although the restaurants do have limited capacity seating. But my last dinner out was with my hubby on one of our “adventures in eating” dates. We went to a place in Waikiki that overlooked the beach. It was great… great food, great view, great atmosphere.

2. Show us a picture of your favorite cuisine.

I can’t pick just one, so…

3. What is the funniest thing a man/woman has said to you lately?

Every damn day. My 19yo is hilarious and he has this weird voice that he does bits in. The bits probably aren’t that funny… it’s that damn voice!

4. What makes a gentleman a gentleman in today’s dating world? Are there any left?

Okay, so I’m married, not dating. But I think there are lots of “gentlemen” left in this world. I think what’s changed is the definition of what it means to be a gentleman. And I’m okay with that. There are times when the traditional ideas of “being a gentleman” can be disempowering, especially when it’s done with a condescending attitude. Truth be told, I think the idea of “gentlemen” is outdated. All those attributes that make up a stereotypical gentlemen? I think those are just good manners that we should be showing each other, regardless of gender.

5. Is there anything you won’t tolerate when out to dinner with your significant other?

Not really. I’m pretty laidback in general.

6. What type of ambiance do you enjoy in an eating establishment?

Well, here in Hawaii, my favorite ambiance is a beachy vibe. I love restaurants with a vibe, with the chill vibe Hawaii is known for.

7. Tell us about the worst public dining experience you ever had, whether it be a date or with your family.

When I was stationed in Monterey, California, a bunch of us went out to dinner one night at a restaurant on the wharf. Some random guy nearby got wasted, stood up, stumbled, fell into me, and then puked all over my food. That was… fun.

8. What is the lamest or rudest thing a man/woman has said to you lately?

I don’t have time to list them all! The better question is… do I care? Nope, not at all. Why? Because it generally says a whole lot more about the kind of person they are than it does about me. So come at me, bro. I’ve dealt with bigger and badder, and will continue to do so.

9. Are you a good tipper?

Extremely, as long as the waitperson wasn’t a flaming asshat.

10. Do you ask for doggie bags when you leave food on your plate at a restaurant?

It depends on the food item.

11. What is your pet peeve about restaurants and dining out in general?

Tourists. Tourist can be so incredibly rude and racist and judgy to locals and local foods and local traditions. Why the hell do you come to Hawaii if not for the culture? So why come and be an asshole?

12. Do you prefer to order yourself or do you ever let your significant other order for you?

Nope. Negative, Ghost Rider. I order for myself, thanks.

13. Describe your most intimate romantic dinner ever. (fantasy or real)

Nothing extraordinary, but my absolutely favorite romantic dinner involved takeout tacos and the beach. My hub came home, changed out of his uniform, and told me to come with. We stopped at Killer Tacos on the North Shore and picked up tacos to go. He drove down the road to the beach. We carry beach mats in our cars, so he pulled it out, and we set up on the beach, just in time to eat and watch the sunset over the ocean.

14. Do you enjoy piano bars?

There not on the top of my list, but I like them.

15. If you could go anywhere in the world for dinner, where would it be and who would you be with?

Tram’s Cookery in Thuận An, Việt Nam, about twenty minutes from Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh. I was a Vietnamese linguist in the Army, I love the rich culture of the country. This place is in a beautiful resort along the Sông Sài Gòn (Saigon River).

  1. My youngest son does a really funny Russian accent. When he says “Bring me the girls – and the vodka” we howl with laughter.

Lucky you living in Hawaii – I have travelled a lot but never made it there – it is on the list.

    :o)

    Cheers

  2. I think you’re right about the idea of a “gentleman” is out of date, and it’s manners that matter. Although, I would still expect the man to open the door for me! What a horrible experience to have a drunk get sick on your food! I can’t imagine much worse. My late parent-in-laws were terrible people, racist for one thing. In a restaurant one time my mother-in-law loudly talked about other races, and I wanted to hide. She thought she was being complimentary.
