I meander around Zillow a lot. Not because I’m shopping for a new home, but for my job. I use Zillow for research and inspiration for my writing. Sometimes I use it to get an idea of an area… the costs, the look, that kind of thing. But I also like having “muse” homes for my characters, even if little of it goes into the book. It helps me create a fully realized version of my character in my head. And sometimes I just like to meander for fun.

Here are thirteen houses I love for all kinds of reasons, in no particular order…

1. Gargoyle Castle

I mean, what’s not to love? It’s a creepy castle in the middle of nowhere with gargoyles guarding the entrance. I’m all the way there for it!

$300,000
221 Collins Valley Road
Walhalla, SC 29691
Zillow listing

2. Retro Living

The inside is just as retro as the outside, and I love it! It’s got the candy colors, the curved walls, vintage bathroom tiling, retro cabinets. So adorable!

off the market
2105 Erdman Avenue
Baltimore, MD 21218
Zillow listing

3. Avant Garde Realness

It’s… a lot. Complete with a sunken kitchen in a circular dip in the middle of the most bizarre flooring I’ve ever seen. I’m there for the bathtub, though!

$975,000
113 Springy Banks Road
East Hampton, NY 11937
Zillow listing

4. Beach Concrete

This is definitely a dream home rather than ever a reality, but I love it! It’s right on the beach, not too far from where I live. And the best feature… it has a library!!

$14,400.000
59-069 Hoalua Street
Haleiwa, HI 96712
Zillow listing

5. Home Sweet Home, Part I

Okay, so there’s nothing spectacular about this. But it’s where I lived from the time I was 11. The inside is very different from what it once was, but I loved it when it was mine!

off the market
25 Pleasant Street
Potsdam, NY 13676
Zillow listing

6. Cave Living

It’s a fabulously interesting place, but the lower levels would give me massive claustrophobia!

off the market
3204 W Highway 80
Bisbee, AZ 85603
Zillow listing

7. Living the Life

If you ever have the need to host 1000 guests, literally, than this is the place for you! There’s an outdoor ballroom and “theatrical” water features, because we all need that in our lives!

$59,000,000
601 Mountain Drive
Beverly Hills, CA 90210
Zillow listing

8. Home Sweet Home, Part II

Another one that is spectacular only to me. It was my grandparents’ home, and one that means a lot to me. The inside is very different, but it will always be anothe home to me. That red door is so weird to me, since it was peach before! <3

off the market
15 State Street
Potsdam, NY 13676
Zillow listing

9. Swimming Inside

This place is GORGEOUS! Forget the pool… the windows, the nature, the outdoor deck and courtyard. I love it all!!

$697,000
414 Holly Street
Ashland, OR 97520
Zillow listing

10. The House Mullet

This house… it’s business in the front and a party in the back. This photo is the teaser, so click the listing to see the back. It’s wild, and I’m there for it!

$750,000
1825 Merriman Avenue
Charlotte, NC 28203
Zillow listing

11. Gothic Football Cottage

The interests manifested in the decor are… varied. Click the listing to see the football side of it. I just had to share this bedroom. I do love that stair railing!!

off the market
228 Townsend Avenue
Brooklyn, MD 21225
Zillow listing

12. The Time Warp

This place is a throwback to the 70’s. It was kept in its original decor from the time it was built. It is WILD! Go look for yourself!

off the market
2055 S Joshua Tree Place
Palm Springs, CA 92264
Zillow listing

13. Living Locked Up

This two-bedroom house comes with a two-story jail containing nine cells with toilets!! And it’s fully functional. The entrance to the jail is in the kitchen, leading to a few cells on the top floor, and the rest on the bottom. There’s also a booking room. I mean, yes. I would live there.

The listing on Zillow no longer has pics, so I linked to an article with photos below.

  1. Indoor swimming pools always make me feel uncomfortable. I feel weird when I see them! Creepy. I looked at a castle type house before I bought the one I’m in. It needed way too much work, but my then teen daughter loved the turret room!

  2. So completely interesting! Wish I could buy a castle for that price! I could make it work! I absolutely could not live in a house with a coffin or 19th century jail cells! The Time Warp and Avant Guarde were a little much for me! I dig in the indoor pool!
