Saturday 9: friends in low places (1990)

Unfamiliar with this week’s tune? Hear it here.

A side note… I adore this song. I’m not a country fan most of the time, but Garth Brooks is different!

1) In this song, Garth Brooks tells us he wore boots to a black-tie affair. When did you most recently get dressed up? What did you wear?

It was for the last Army ball before my husband retired. Valentine’s Day 2019. It was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, in one of the big ballrooms. Here we are!!

2) The lyrics refer to The Oasis, which was a real bar in Concordia, Kansas. What’s the name of the last bar or restaurant where you ordered a beverage? (Yes, Dunkin’ counts.)

The Haleiwa Beach Café a few months ago before tourism reopened and Hawai’i entered crisis mode for COVID.

3) Garth was having a stellar 2021. He kicked the year off by performing “Amazing Grace” at President Biden’s inauguration in January, and then over the summer he received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor. Now that we’re past the halfway mark, how’s your year going?

See disclaimer above. I’m unapolegetically spicy.

It’s a mixed bag. My own personal stuff is fine. But I worry nonstop about my brother and SIL who are RNs in the front lines of COVID. I worry about my island, with COVID as bad as it’s been. It’s a small string of islands in the middle of the ocean. But the tourists don’t give a damn, and neither does too much of the younger sect of the military (which there is a lot of here.) It’s not their home, so why give a crap, right? Please note the sarcasm. In the meantime, hospitals have run out of space. Maui is in crisis mode with their hospitals, and my island, O’ahu, has the biggest population and the higher numbers. Our morgues are overflowing, refridgerated trucks now being used. A west Oah’u hospital filled so much they had to open an auxilliary tent hospital in the parking lot. And still, even after this long, people care more about themselves then their fellow man and refuse to take even the basest of precautions. Yes. I’m angry.

4) But earlier this month, Garth cancelled the remaining August and September dates of his big concert tour. He’s provided refunds for the 350,000 tickets that were sold. How do you tend to react when plans change? Are you easily annoyed, or do you roll with it?

I roll with it. Shit happens.

5) Before he sang about having friends in low places, Garth hung around in some. When he was as a struggling performer, he supported himself as a bouncer. What’s the most physically taxing job you’ve ever had?

It’s a toss-up between being a soldier and motherhood. Both are pretty physical!!

6) According to the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), Garth surpassed The Beatles as the top-selling recording artist of the last 30 years. Who do you listen to more often: Garth or the Beatles?

Definitely Garth!

7) Garth and singer Trisha Yearwood have been happily married for 15 years now. Trisha says that as much as she loves her husband, his whistling drives her crazy. Come clean: what’s your most annoying habit?

Probably trying to get stuff done when others don’t want to bother. I’m all about getting the stuff done now so we can all chill later.

8) In 1990, when this song was a hit, Soviet President Gorbachev traveled first to Ottawa to meet Prime Minister Mulroney and then to Washington DC to meet President Bush. Do you have any travel plans? We want to hear about them, even if you aren’t meeting any politicians or heads of state.

Not during a pandemic.

9) Random question: Your dear friend spends weeks planning a party. After just 30 minutes, you find yourself having a terrible time. Would you leave at the earliest (polite) opportunity? Or would you stay till the bitter end out of loyalty?

I would stay to the end.

  1. I was thinking of this song just last night! My son had been out and for some reason listened to country in the car. He was saying all the songs were about… and one thing was about knowing “important people.” I thought of “friends in low places” instead, which are probably more fun! I told my son country hasn’t been the same since the early Garth Brooks. I’m admit, I’m not much of a The Beatles fan. I usually say, “If they come on the radio I wouldn’t turn them off,” meaning they are okay. But, honestly, I usually turn them off. My older son says it’s a The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, one or the other with people. I’m glad Garth and Trisha are happy, I still feel for his ex and those little girls he had though.
So terrible so many just don’t care about simple infectious disease precautions! It’s just nothing short of selfish and stupid. My own nephew won’t get the vaccine since he thinks the whole thing is a “scam.” He’s 39 and should know better, but was raised as a conservative. Although his parents got vaccinated, they are nearly 80, so didn’t risk it. My brother is VERY conservative, but not selfish.

  2. I love the pictures of you and your husband. I too am angry now that we are having this wave of virus – it could have been avoided if people had only listened. We are full as well – and they are shipping patients to other hospitals because there is no room here locally. A friend of mine had her mother sent to Richmond last night via ambulance. It’s a 3 hour drive from where we are. That is a long time in an ambulance, and she will be all alone in Richmond. So sad.

  3. I understand a bit about tourists. I am not in Hawaii, but this is considered a tourist attraction area, so there have been several here and covid numbers jumped this summer to an all time high and with delta, it is so much worse that it ever was last year. I pray you stay safe.
I love the pictures! Loved your answers! Have a great weekend!

  4. My son owned a bar here and he hated that song! He liked it until he heard it a hundred times a night… he also hated “I Love This Bar” (I think that’s the name of it) even though when people played everyone sang it and truly did love his bar. I too, am so angry at the selfishness of people. We should have been long over this pandemic if only people could think of someone besides themselves. Enjoy your weekend.

  6. I am sad to hear that Covid is so bad in Hawaii. We were suppose to go to Maui this fall and decided to postpone. We pushed it back to spring and now we are suppose to go to Oahu. My hubby and I are vaccinated. My son had Covid and his wife never got sick but thinks she might have been exposed. We will see what happens. I love the island and if I could live anywhere it would be there. I like that picture of you and your husband!

  7. I am so sorry to hear how bad things are in Hawaii. I get what you mean about tourists. I live in Chicago. Tourists from Kentucky or Wisconsin drive in and go around maskless because they don’t have mandates at home. Like viruses know and understand state lines!
