As a writer, I do lots of research on a lot of things. One of the most fun parts of that is stumbling on interesting places that I can visit virtually. Here are 13 places you can jetset to for free!

  1. The National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC. There are tours of the permanent exhibits, current exhibits, even past exhibits. There are also tours of research areas and narrated tours. There’s also a link to other tours offered by the Smithsonian Institute.
  2. The Louvre in Paris. There several tours available for different exhibits.
  3. The Vatican in the Vatican City. You can visit the Sistine Chapel, among others. There are three pages of virtual tours here.
  4. The Royal Academy of Arts: Sensing Spaces exhibit in London. This is a really cool, architechtural exhibit with installations that are as big as houses.
  5. Eye Revolution. This is the same company who produced the above tour. On their Portfolio pages, they have all kinds of tours in other places, mostly around London.
  6. Machu Picchu in Peru. This one has narration, and the visuals are amazing!
  7. The Temples of Angkor in Cambodia. There are several temples to explore with lots of places to click and read about them. So beautiful.
  8. The Forbidden City in Beijing. There are links within the tour to explore several different areas. Not a lot of super close-ups, but still beautiful and interesting.
  9. The Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland. This one has beautiful visuals of the cliffs that let you get up close and personal. The only downside is that, in a browser, it doesn’t open fullscreen.
  10. The Rose-Red City of Petra in Jordan. This tour is narrated and there are so many places to explore. This is one of my favorites.
  11. The Hobbiton movie set in New Zealand. Okay, so this one’s a little of an offshoot. But if you love Lord of the Rings in any form, as I do, this is a fun one. There’s a map on the page, and you can click on the markers for virtual tours of those locations.
  12. The Palace of Versailles in France. This one is fully inside the palace, which is gorgeous!
  13. The Great Wall of China. The views are beautiful! Just click the arrows to explore.

  1. Cool idea. I’ve been to the Cliffs of Moher and think I’ll check out Machu Picchu. Here’s an exhibit I virtually toured because I couldn’t get to NYC… Alexa Meade Immersed in Wonderland. It wouldn’t let me link it.
