When my youngest two were little (there is a big gap between them and their brother, same father, people always wondered) they took gymnastics. During one of the annual shows the routine was to Smash Mouth’s cover of I’m a Believer. Of course, now, that’s the only one people know about, but I remember the Monkees! My friend got a pile of Monkee’s lps for her birthday in 7th grade! I never got into them. I like the Smash Mouth version, and it’s so much better.
(Sweet tea? Whenever I get it in error, I can’t drink it. Like syrup. On a vacation in Puerto Rico years ago, I was so hot and thirsty, and not used to humidity. Lo and behold, a Burger King! Ordered a big iced tea. One sip later, threw it out! Not refreshing at all when it’s sweet. Now I know to ask if it’s unsweetened.)
I like Smash Mouth’s better, too. And sweet tea… gah. Every time, it’s a letdown!
… and Willie Nelson does a good The City of New Orleans. Also, that The Sound of Silence is really good. I’d forgotten about that cover.
Sometimes it’s refreshing to hear a new take on a classic. The Sounds of Silence, from an album I bought as a girl, is positively haunting in this cover.
It is one of my all-time favorite covers. It gets me deep in the soul.
Fantastic selections!
The “Mad World” cover is much different than the original
Great list! I love The Sound of Silence and Red Red Wine.
Disturbed’s cover of Sound of Silence is wonderful. I have loved it since I first heard it. Great list.
