1. What do you consider nature’s perfect food?

Ube. At the risk of sounding like Bubba of Forrest Gump fame, there’s ube ice cream, ube chips, ube milkshakes, ube jam, ube cakes, ube lattes, ube pancakes, ube bread… and so on. It’s delicious.

In a nonliteral sense, the beach. The sun, the wind, the water, the sand… perfection.

2. What was once difficult for you but now seems like second nature?

This is a tough one. Probably letting things go, although I think it’s more that I’m almost to second nature. I realized holding on to resentment for wrongs done to me was only doing me harm. It was hard to let those things go because it felt like I was allowing them to get away with what they did to me. Eventually, I realized I’m never going to get what I need from them, so why continue to waste my time and energy on it?

3. What is your favorite way to commune with nature?

The aforementioned beach. Bonus points for honu or shark sightings. The latter from a distance and safely, of course. I just find them fascinating and beautiful, and the ocean, after all, is their human. I also love watching the surfers. And if I’m at Mokulēʻia, I like watching the skydivers and kiteboarders.

4. How have you tamed nature within your living space?

I could kill a fake plant, so nature within the walls is limited to the human beings and Loki and Java, the dog and cat. Plus any random geckos that have made my home theirs, which I’m good with because they take care of icky creepy crawlies. Also the occasional centipede, which are swiftly evicted.

5. When you were you last bitten, stung, or slimed by nature?

I got shat on by a wild parakeet of some variety. Considering the large population of waxbills, honeycreepers, egrets, canaries, and chickens where I live, I feel pretty lucky I’ve only gotten bombed once.
