1. In 2021, who made you laugh?

My kid. He’s 20, and he developed a weird aspect to his sense of humor since the beginning of COVID. He has this voice he uses when he does bits, and that makes it even funnier.

2. What was a pleasant surprise?

There haven’t been too many surprises. It’s been a bit of a humdrum year overall!

3. How have you grown?

I’ve learned to cut myself a break. Okay maybe not completely, but better than I have been.

4. What do you forgive yourself for?

Not being perfect.

5. If you were to get a tattoo to represent the year, what would it be and where would you put it?

There are a lot of tattoos I want to add to my collection, but none of them have to do with the year. There is one I want to get, but I don’t know that it represents the year, just a part of it. Growing up, my family was a foster family. The last foster child my family had was after I was already out and in the Army, in my early twenties, but we became close nonetheless. She had a rough life, and if there was ever anyone who deserved better than she got, it was her. But life became too much for her, and she committed suicide at the beginning of the month. It’s broken me. I want to get a piece of a map, in honor of her. She was a cartographer in the Army, and she loved it. They were some of her best years.

  1. Such a difficult way to end the year. I’m very sorry to hear it.

Happy new year anyway. Your learning to cut yourself some slack hits a note with me — something for me to reflect on this evening.
