the observations

Yesterday, I was called bougie for drinking my iced tea out of a vintage goblet, a teal one much like the ones below from ShopPennVintage on Etsy. And I don’t think it was meant as a compliment. In truth, it was less about feeling bougie, although I see nothing wrong with making the mundane more of a moment, and more about feeling nostalgic. I was a child of the 1970s, and just about everyone had these kinds of glasses, almost always mismatched. Ours were in avocado. I started buying some on Etsy, in teal, and I love them.

In other news, my eldest’s car was stolen from the parking lot of his apartment complex in Orlando. He’s a prof at University of Florida some 20 minutes away, so that’s an extra lovely bit of fallout. Fortunately, a fellow prof lives in the same complex, and they’re friends, so that’s a help. Fun fact… according to the police who took his statement, his car (a Hyundai Tucson) and the Hyundai Elantra are the most often stolen in Florida. Once they’re broken into, apparently they’re easy to start. Lovely.

1. How easily are you startled?

It’s a curse, how startled I can be. I attribute it to past trauma, but whatever the cause… I hate it. My fight-or-flight response is on a hair trigger, which my family has learned over the years. I’ve tamped it down a lot, but there are still moments when I instinctually swing first, feel bad later.

2. What music do you find scary?

I don’t really find any music scary. Of course, I’m a bit of a metalhead, so there’s that.

3. When did you last attend a performance you didn’t think highly of?

I can’t think of one. In lieu of that… I did just finish a book that I wanted to love but didn’t. I found it kinda cringey and weird.

4. What caused your most recent small cut or scrape?

It happened when a random chicken (I live in Hawai’i, where there are lots of “hurricane” chickens running around) shot out of nowhere and ran at me as I walked to the mailboxes. I tripped over my own feet in order to avoid it running into me and scraped my knee against the metal corner of the mailboxes. Good times.

5. When was your ego most recently bruised, and what did you do to recover?

A few days ago when I opened a manuscript in progress, full of certainty that the previous day’s words were fire. They were not. They weren’t even a spark. Note to self, do not write when hopped up on Benedryl. It never goes well.

  1. Those dark red Cape Cod glasses caused such a wave of nostalgia. Maybe one nice glass for my desk would be nice, hm? And maybe the ‘swing first, apologize later’ is a Kim trait? :)
