thursday 13: things I do to take care of myself

Coming up with a topic was hard for me this week. These days, I exist in a constant state of emotional hell. I have vacillated between rage and anxiety with very few moments of peace for the last <insert the first line in the nightmare countdown in my “today” widget to the right>. It’s a state I don’t see changing for at least the next <insert the second line in the nightmare countdown in my “today” widget to the right>. But I also don’t want to dwell in that place because it’s mentally draining, and I’m fucking exhausted. So this is my attempt at lightheartedness.


  1. Take a hot bath with a yummy paper face mask, lovely natural bath products, and lotions and potions for when I’m done.
  2. Make some cơm tấm, which is a Vietnamese dish of rice and grilled marinated pork topped with a runny egg. I drizzle scallion oil and nước mắm (fermented fish sauce) on top, add some fresh scallions and some sliced cucumbers. I also make đồ chua, which is pickled carrot and daikon radish. Perfect comfort food!
  3. Play Vintage Story with my husband, or some World of Warcraft.
  4. Read a good book.
  5. Do yoga to non-yoga music like Metallica or The Hu, maybe some Delilah Bon or Rage Against the Machine.
  6. Watch my favorite YouTube channels Smosh Games, Smosh Pit, or Smosh Cast. Or my favorite streamers like Try Guys, Watcher, or Dropout.
  7. If it’s bedtime, watch my “soothing” YouTube channels like Royalty Soaps, vapor.03, Huyana Beauty, or Florian Gadsby.
  8. Get on Duolingo and do my language lessons.
  9. Ignore social media and cable TV.
  10. Go to the beach and do my best to unwind.
  11. Hug my husband.
  12. Hug my kids.
  13. Cuddle my dog.
