1. Who in your life is a real joker?

That would probably be me, or my man child #3. An irreverent sense of humor is a trait shared by both the family of my birth and the family of my marriage, but it is MC #3 and I who are generally the jokesters of the crew. Everyone can be funny, but we truly commit to the bit.

2. When did you take the money and run?

Probably when I quit my executive assistant job in a university and went back into the Army some 25 years ago. Yeah, that probably seems like the opposite of “taking the money,” as soldiers aren’t exactly paid well. But in truth, at the time, I was getting shafted by the university, so the military really did pay better. The university was a shit show of cliques, to which I should have belonged, as the daughter of an alumni. But I’m a rebel to the core, and I didn’t play well with the arrogant, pompous bullshit culture. So I enjoyed my “take this job and shove it moment” immensely.

3. Whose music is rock’n you this week?

It’s been a lot of Delilah Bon and Apocalyptica doing Metallica this week. The former to fuel my rage at the current state of the country (see my “today” widget to the right), and the latter to calm my savage soul. Lemme give you an example of each, the former of which is difficult for a non-NSFW song, which says something about my level of rage.

4. When do you next expect to be on a jet airliner, and where do you expect it will take you?

No idea. The hubs and I have been talking about taking a honeymoon at some point. You know, some 23 years post-wedding. But with the world now, better save the money. Plus side, we live in Hawai’i, so maybe we’ll take a staycation somewhere in the islands for a few days. Which actually, I’d probably prefer these days. We did that for our anniversary a few years ago, a few days away on the other side of the island, walking the beach, and eating at our favorite local places, far from the tourists. Good times.

5. Which movies set in jungles do you love?

How about a top 3?

The African Queen (1951).

Katharine Hepburn for the win! This was my grandmother’s favorite film, so I can’t watch it anymore without a hint of sadness. We watched it together just a couple weeks before she passed.

The Lost City (2022).

I love a good comedy! Also… Daniel Radcliffe as a bad guy? I’m into it.

Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981).

You can’t go wrong with Indy!

  1. The African Queen is my second favorite film of all time. Great choice. :)

I planned to take a staycation a couple of years ago but car rentals and room rentals were ridiculous — and they’re still pretty much through the roof. Then on a whim, I checked room prices in Oakland (where my favorite team plays baseball, and I have never seen my favorite team play baseball) and at first I was stunned. It was cheaper to stay 10 days in Oakland, even adding airfare and stuff.

Which made sense to me after a few beats. Of course it’s cheaper to stay in Oakland than anywhere in Hawaii. :)

    • Sad, but true. It helped for us that the hubs had frequent-flyer points from work that took the cost down a lot. My favorite team is NHL, the New York Rangers, and I too have never seen my favorite team play live.
